Syosset High School student Eleni Fregakis has been named a 2018 winner of the Jodi Shapiro Memorial Award.

Eleni was honored at the LIASEA annual luncheon and received a $500 scholarship. Eleni was nominated by Director of PPS Mary-Lou Sapienza. According to Sapienza, “Eleni has a character like no other. She strives to make the world a better place. She is naturally caring and compassionate and has the courage and energy to take action whenever she sees a need”. In addition to being a dedicated student, Eleni is an active member of the community, volunteering her time at the Mary Brennan Inn and Ronald McDonald House. Eleni plans to work in the field of retail fashion after graduation through the OPWDD Employee Training Program.

The Jodi Shapiro scholarship awards are designed to encourage and support outstanding students who exhibit extraordinary abilities in sports, arts, community service and extracurricular activities beyond the classroom. The Awards Committee of the Long Island Association of Special Education Administrators has established this award to recognize students who have been in a special education program for 60% or more of the school day, successfully met goals on his/her IEP and will meet the requirements for completion.
