Important News: Student Loss

Dear Members of the Syosset Community,

It is my very sad duty to inform you of the passing of Emma Chang, a student at Syosset High School and a graduate of South Woods Middle School. On behalf of the entire Syosset school community, we wish to extend the family our most profound condolences and we ask that you join us in respecting the family’s need for privacy during this difficult time.

The District will be providing support for students and staff as they grieve this loss. Grief counselors will be available in the high school student lobby on Wednesday, December 27 and Thursday, December 28 from 9-11 am. In addition, school psychologists will be available for consult and support by phone on December 29th. Please call the Pupil Services Office at (516) 364-5616 to get in touch with our psychologists.

We encourage you to take a moment to engage your child in conversation at this time, especially if it is the first time they have experienced loss. Grieving is a process that affects everyone in different ways and it is so very important to talk through this as a family. Your child will have feelings they need to express. The best support is to simply listen and give them the time and space they need to gain perspective. We are grateful that our students have close relationships with their guidance counselors and teachers, and we will be available to assist and guide you and your children.

Please do not hesitate to contact the High School Guidance Office at (516) 364-5686, your child’s Guidance Counselor, or the Main Office for assistance for your family as well as individual support for your child.

Sincerely,

Dr. Tom Rogers Superintendent of Schools
